WWE mentality about NXT has changed direction.
It seems NXT is no longer eating at the main table
For most of last year and early this year, WWE chairman Vince McMahon gave some extra attention towards WWE's third show. With NXT emerging victorious at Survivor Series last year this saw many of the shows stars being prominently featured in the Royal Rumble. This also saw NXT given a place on Wednesday nights to go against rising rival company AEW's Dynamite.
The war in ratings between NXT and AEW has proven difficult. NXT's Halloween Havoc put on a good show and beat AEW Dynamite in the ratings after weeks of falling behind, however they still lost out to Dynamite who won 18-49 demographic.
The question is, has this changed the way VInce and WWE see the Black and Gold brand?
On an episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer was in discussion of the mentality of WWE, and how any changes made could have possibly lead to NXT being snubbed from this years Survivor series. The ratings war has played a factor and the COVID-19 outbreaks at the Performance Centre haven't helped either and could have played a part.
Here's what Meltzer said:
“I think the COVID thing plays into it, but last year I think there was a mentality of ‘beat AEW,’ and this year I almost think it’s like — even though they did a good number this week — you know they’ve got hammered so much that it’s just one of those things where you just don’t acknowledge the fight anymore and you don’t try to put all your resources into fighting because then it becomes one of those things where ‘we sent Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins there and we sent Charlotte Flair there for a couple of months and we did this and that and look at what happened.” “It’s kinda like our goal now is to keep that 200-250,000 people away from them so they look better and that’s what it is. You know just to keep them below a certain level and that’s what [NXT’s] role is.”
The mentality change may have caused things to creatively change as well. NXT being left off Survivor Series, as well as being snubbed out of the WWE Draft. However WWE still pushes and mentions big NXT events, although the momentum from a mere year ago has seemed to halt them in their tracks. It's strange to think how this could be since they were the winning brand at last years Survivor Series. This hasn't gone unnoticed, as some fans are disappointed in this decision.
