Top 10 Survivor Series Main Events

With Survivor Series this sunday we look back at the Top 10 best Survivor Series main events of all time

P-Nut's Top 10 Survivor Series Main Events

Survivor Series is one of the big four PPV's within WWE. It started as a thanksgiving tradition in 1987 and throughout the years has become legendary. Let's look back through the 34 year history and rank the top ten best Survivor Series matches of all time...

Dishonourable Mentions

1. Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg - Survivor Series 2016 - After spending years away from the ring Goldberg came back and challenged Brock Lesnar, seemingly just so his son could see a Goldberg match live. What we ended up with is a squash match that lasted less than 01:30.

2. Triple H (c) Vs. Goldberg - World Heavyweight Championship - Survivor Series 2003 - This match is a great example of why title matches main eventing PPV's isn't always the best move. After an amazing card that featured two great Survivor Series matches, an Ambulance match & a Buried Alive match we ended the show with this. It should never have been the main event on such a stacked card.

3. Shawn Michaels Vs. Bret Hart (c) - WWF Championship - Survivor Series 1997 - It wouldn't be Survivor Series without bringing this match up. As monumental as the Montreal Screwjob has come to be known the match itself is poor. After what seems like forever fighting in the crowd Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart finally get in the ring an wrestle for what feels like five minutes before the incident occurs. A short match with a screwy finish doesn't belong on anybodys top match lists.

Honourable Mentions

1. The Heenan Family (Bobby Heenan, Andre The Giant, Arn Anderson & Haku Vs. The Ultimate Warriors (The Ultimate Warrior, Jim Neidhart, Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels) - This match is quite fun. In a rare occurrence Bobby Heenan actually laces up his boots and steps into the ring. He probably thinks he's protected by Andre but he manages to get himself counted out very early on. A classic Survivor Series match that is gentle watching.

2. Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior & Tito Santana Vs. Hercules, Paul Roma, Rick Martel, The Warlord & Ted DiBiase - Can the team of two main eventers and a pretty solid midcarder defeat the team of one legend and his four midcard associates? You will have to watch to find out in this twist on what a Survivor Series match is. This match was 11th on my rankings list and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like the other honourable mention it's another classic Survivor Series match.

10. Undertaker Vs. Yokozuna - Casket Match - Survivor Series 1994

10. Undertaker Vs. Yokozuna - Casket Match - Survivor Series 1994

After all the shenanigans that went down earlier in the year at Royal Rumble in a casket match, I was somewhat apprehensive to find they had another rematch so close to the last. We still have all the interference and shenanigans we had at the Royal Rumble, but luckily the special guest referee is Chuck Norris. This is a classic casket match and is worth a look.

9. Bret Hart (c) vs Shawn Michaels - WWF Championship -Survivor Series 1992

9. Bret Hart (c) vs Shawn Michaels - WWF Championship -Survivor Series 1992

This match is often overshadowed and forgotten about due to the Montreal Screwjob but five years earlier these two duked it out in a technical classic. This match is quite slow compared to matches we have today and their isn't as much of Shawn Michaels' trademark aerial offence. Instead we have a much more Bret heavy match which is more slow and technical. If you like technical wrestling and grappling you will love this match.

8. Daniel Bryan Vs. Brock Lesnar - Champion Vs. Champion - Survivor Series 2018

8. Daniel Bryan Vs. Brock Lesnar - Champion Vs. Champion - Survivor Series 2018

David vs Goliath is a bit of a theme at Survivor Series and this is the first of our list. The problem with any Brock Lesnar match is you go into it expecting Brock Lesnar to dominate and then when he does everybody is still disappointed. This isn't your usual Brock Lesnar squash and these two have a decent length match.

7. Team Raw (Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe & Triple H) Vs. Team Smackdown (Bobby Roode, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura & Shane McMahon) - Survivor Series 2017

7. Team Raw (Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe & Triple H) Vs. Team Smackdown (Bobby Roode, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura & Shane McMahon) - Survivor Series 2017

The star power in this match makes it one of those great Survivor Series matches where classic moments happen at regular intervals. This is another match where shenanigans throughout actually end up adding to the match and stop it being lost in the shuffle with a lot of other less eventful matches of the same stipulation. I don't give away match results or spoilers in my lists, but I will say the finish to this match is nothing short of baffling.

6. Bret Hart Vs. Diesel (c) - No Disqualification - WWF Championship - Survivor Series 1995

6. Bret Hart Vs. Diesel (c) - No Disqualification - WWF Championship - Survivor Series 1995

Our second David vs. Goliath match on my Survivor Series list. This match occurs during Diesel's extremly long title run of 358 days which has been criticised as being boring. I was surprised to find this match was really good. Normally in a David vs. Goliath match, you have more of a high flyer going up against a powerhouse but it adds another layer to see a technical wrestler as David, it makes the match unique.

5. Shawn Michaels (c) Vs. Psycho Sid - WWF Championship - Survivor Series 1996

5. Shawn Michaels (c) Vs. Psycho Sid - WWF Championship - Survivor Series 1996

The third and final David vs. Goliath of our list and it's Shawn Michaels vs Psycho Sid. This is your typical highflyer vs powerhouse situation that has been used many times in wrestling but there is perhaps none better than Shawn Michaels himself. The crowd are extremly invested in this match throughout and almost blow the roof off the arena. Sid is in the same position as his match at WrestleMania with Hogan. I'm surprised just how good he actually is. I wouldn't have said he is somebody who stood out growing up but his matches impress everytime I make these lists now.

4. Team Cena (John Cena, Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan & Ryback Vs. Team Authority (Kane, Mark Henry, Luke Harper, Rusev & Seth Rollins) - Survivor Series 2014

4. Team Cena (John Cena, Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan & Ryback Vs. Team Authority (Kane, Mark Henry, Luke Harper, Rusev & Seth Rollins) - Survivor Series 2014

Team Cena vs.Team Authority, and if the authority lose they are no longer in power, however if Team Cena lose they are all fired. That is the premise for what is probably the most chaotic and shenanigan filled Survivor Series match of all time. This match is a back and forth, anybody could win type affair. This is a quality match from 2014 with an ending you have to see to believe.

3. Triple H (c) Vs. Booker T Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Kane Vs. Rob Van Dam Vs. Shawn Michaels - Elimination Chamber - World Heavyweight Championship - Survivor Series 2002

3. Triple H (c) Vs. Booker T Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Kane Vs. Rob Van Dam Vs. Shawn Michaels - Elimination Chamber - World Heavyweight Championship - Survivor Series 2002

The first ever Elimination Chamber match took place at the 2002 Survivor Series in Madison Square Garden. This match could easily have been number one if it wasn't a little slower in places. It is one of the longest Chamber matches in history and compared to other matches of it's type, it isn't the best. Compared to other Survivor Series main events though it's one of the all time greats. It's worth a watch just to see how chamber matches were before they evolved to be more like we see today.

2. Triple H Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Survivor Series 2000

2. Triple H Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Survivor Series 2000

Stone Cold Steve Austin was run over by Rikishi the previous year at Survivor Series and it turned out that Triple H was behind the entire thing. This makes sense if you watched the incident because Triple H actually lures Austin to the back. This match is a year in the making and it mostly consists of Austin whailing on Triple H to get his revenge. This match is probably the most brutal Survivor Series main event of them all.

1. Team WWF (Big Show, Chris Jericho, Kane, The Rock & The Undertaker) Vs. Team Alliance (Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T & Shane McMahon) - Winner Take All - Survivor Series 2001

1. Team WWF (Big Show, Chris Jericho, Kane, The Rock & The Undertaker) Vs. Team Alliance (Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T & Shane McMahon) - Winner Take All - Survivor Series 2001

The Alliance invasion of WWF left a lot to be desired and has been heavily criticized for not featuring some of the top names that waiting a short time longer could have solved. As a result, a lot of WWF had to jump ship prior to this match leaving only Booker T and RVD to represent the alliance as former WCW and ECW talent. The other eight participants are WWF guys that jumped ship at some point during 2001 one way or another.

The match itself is fantastic and it really felt back in 2001 that everything really was all on the line. This was the dramatic conclusion of a years worth of heavy storytelling and it truly deserves to be considered the best Survivor Series main event ever, despite the flaws of the Alliance era.
