Top 10 Best Hell in a Cell Matches
It's October and you know what that means. It's the month of the Hell in a Cell PPV. Whether you love the stipulation PPV's or you hate them, you can't deny their have been some classic Hell in a Cell matches over the years. For all the fans out there looking to watch a few to get in the mood. I am P-Nut from RealRasslin and this is my top 10 list.
Dishonourable Mention - Big Bossman vs Undertaker - WrestleMania XV
Before we talk about the best Hell in a Cell matches we need to address the elephant in the room. This match could have been the greatest Hell in a Cell ever but unfortunately it would still always be overshadowed by the ending. After the match was over, a noose was fed to Undertaker by the Brood, which was then used to hang the Big Bossman with. It was not included on the Hell in a Cell DVD that WWE released years later and it should probably not be included on anybody top 10 list.
Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton - Hell in a Cell 2019 for the brutal moment where Randy put the screwdriver through Jeffs flesh tunnel and twists.
Undertaker vs Shane McMahon - WrestleMania 32 for Shane's incredible leap off the top of the Cell and through the announce tables
Sasha Banks vs Charlotte - For being the first and also the best women's Hell in a Cell
10. Legacy vs Degeneration X - Hell in a Cell 2009
A good way to start the list and this match is a personal favourite of mine. The match doesn't start inside the Cell straightway and when it finally does Legacy have made it a handicap match by locking Triple H outside. This was something that hadnt been seen before and it really adds to the drama and brutality.
9. Usos vs New Day - Hell in a Cell 2017
This was an incredible match and it was a brilliant way to end the feud between these two teams. An added stipulation of no rematch for the tag team titles gave us a rare feud ending Cell match. This match was unique and had everything from customised kendo sticks and musical instruments to utilising the Cell in ways not seen before.
8. Undertaker vs Edge - Summerslam 2008
The story going into the match was Edge had cheated on then partner Vickie Gurrero and this was her revenge. This led to a classic Hell in a Cell which is probably more remembered for what happened after than actually during. I loved the way they teased the spot with the 2 stacked tables for most of the match building up to the big finish. After the match Undertaker chokeslamed Edge through the ring and it wasnt long before flames were rising from the hole. A great end to a very good match
7. Chris Jericho vs Triple H - Judgement Day 2002
The sad part about this match is it would prove to be Timmy Whites last match as a referee. Alot of emphasis was put on how this match shortens careers in the build up but poor Tim gets beat up here pretty badly and the other officials unlock the cell door and he receives medical attention. Not the best send off. The match itself is good and we see a rare appearance from not only a barbed wire 2x4 but also refree Mike Choida climbing the Cell to count the pinfall.
6. Kurt Angle vs The Rock vs Stone Cold vs Undertaker vs Triple H vs Rikishi - Armageddon 2000
What a crazy year 2000 was and it all came to a head in this insane match featuring some of the top stars of the year. A lot of emphasis is put on the Undertaker pushing Rikishi off the top but many other moments are forgotten. The story going into this match was Vince thought it to be a poor investment to have so many top guys in such a brutal match. That led to him trying to tear the whole structure down. With the door to the cell gone that led to a few spots involving the cars by the entrance way. This might be the most star studded main event of all time.
5. Undertaker vs Triple H - WrestleMania 28
This was a dream match of mine finally being put on and it was well worth the wait since 2000 to see. After watching HHH and Undertaker face Mick Foley in their respective cell matches I would always fantasy book this match on wrestling games. The addition of Shawn Michaels as the referee only added to the drama. Triple H was brutal with so many chair shots to Undertaker's back you can actually see the welts and damage in real time. Shawn nearly throws the match out part way through but Undertaker stops him. The iconic moment at the end where all three wrestlers are together caps off a truly epic match. The only criticism of this match is it was a bit too long. That being said it's still one of my all time favourite WrestleMania matches and is truly deserving of a place in the top 5.
4. Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels - Badd Blood 1997
The very first Hell in a Cell match is always going to be remembered fondly. This match set the standard going forward. A really good Hell in a Cell with a surprising debut to anyone who doesn't know its coming. This match was the second of only three PPV encounters involving these two before Shawn would leave after WrestleMania 14. Its definitely worth watching these two legendary wrestlers in their prime.
3. Undertaker vs Brock Lesnar - No Mercy 2002.
To steal a line from J.R. put the women and children to bed on this one. I think this Hell in a Cell has the record for most blood in a Cell match. Undertaker had a broken hand going into it too which makes certain spots even more brutal. At one point Undertaker's broken hand has a belt tied around it using the Cell and Brock Lesnar whales on it with a steel chair before later ripping the cast off entirely. This is a classic match which we never see enough of from Brock Lesnar today.
2. Triple H vs Cactus Jack - No Way Out 2000
Did I mention 2000 was a crazy year? And this epic feud is what started it all off. A rematch from the legendary Street Fight at the Royal Rumble the month before with Mick Foley's career on the line. This literal ring smasher of a match was everything it needed to be for Mrs Foley's baby boy to have an epic send off. There was alot of call backs to some of Micks iconic moments in his Career. A barbwired 2x4 on fire and Mick being put through the Cell roof again ended what was one of the most historic careers as an active wrestler. Foley did go on to wrestle a few matches later but after his match at WrestleMania 16 these were few and far between.
1. Mankind vs Undertaker - King of the Ring 98
As far as this match type goes is any as legendary as this absolute belter? The match starts at the top of the cell which Mankind is almost immediately thrown off. He gets medical attention but its not long before he's back on top of the cell again. Hes then put through the Cell and a nasty hit from the chair knocks him unconcions. It should have ended their really but the match goes on for around another 15 minutes after that. It ends witch some good moments involving thumbtacks. Is s any Hell in a Cell match more well known and iconic than this one? It has gone down as probably one of the most brutal matches in WWE history and there is nowhere else it could possibly have been ranked but number one.
