Real Rasslin Presents: The 2021 Rasslie Awards!

Ok folks the time is finally here, it’s time for the first ever Real Rasslin RASSLIES!

That’s right, the guys here at Real Rasslin came together to highlight the best parts of 2021 and our loyal fans voted on what was in fact the Best of the Best for the year 2021. This is a first of its kind for Real Rasslin with hopes that this will continue to be a yearly event moving forward.

This undertaking has taken a lot of work from not just myself but all the Real Rasslin staff, each and every single one of them have contributed to these awards in their own way. For that I thank them all as this was an idea I felt very strongly about and despite the huge amount of work that was needed to bring it to you fans, none of the Real Rasslin family faulted and stepped up to the plate to ensure it went off without a hitch. Yes, it is being posted a lot later than expected, but that was through no fault of anyone here at Real Rasslin as COVID-19 tried to take down this Thunder King BUT was unsuccessful!

Now, we have 15 categories and 15 winners to announce, so without further delay let’s get onto the FIRST EVER RASSLIE AWARDS!

CATEGORY 1: The Mic Drop Award (Best Talker of 2021).

The Nominees are:

  • Eddie Kingston [AEW]
  • Roman Reigns [WWE]
  • MJF [AEW]
  • Paul Heyman [WWE]
  • CM Punk [AEW]

 And, the winner is……….

MJF has built a reputation as a spiteful, vindictive, and manipulative wrestler who does not care about who he offends when the mic is in his hands. MJF has gone on to out talk some of the greatest talkers in AEW and has garnered a reputation as being one of the best talkers of the modern-day era. Therefore, he has been awarded the Rasslies Mic Drop Award!

CATEGORY 2: Most Improved Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Jungle Boy [AEW]
  • Dante Martin [AEW]
  • Liv Morgan [WWE]
  • Britt Baker D.M.B [AEW]
  • Miro [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

This category was a thrill ride to watch honestly. Liv Morgan started out strong in the votes, but Jungle Boy started to get some votes in then Britt Baker D.M.D just exploded votes wise and overtook Liv. It wasn’t looking too great but Liv started to get the votes and etched out the win in the end. Liv Morgan has improved leaps and bounds in 2021 to the point she was my pick to win the Women’s Rumble.

CATEGORY 3: Most Shocking Moment of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • CM Punks Pro Wrestling Return [AEW]
  • Edge’s Return at the Royal Rumble after Injury [WWE]
  • 4 Debuts at All Out – Adam Cole, Bryan Danielson, Ruby Soho & Minoru Suzuki [AEW]
  • ROH Announces Hiatus [Ring of Honor]
  • Matt Cardona wins GCW World Championship [GCW]

 And the winner is……….

Was this really going to go to anyone or anything else. CM Punk’s return to Professional Wrestling was without a doubt the most shocking moment of the year. Years and Years went by, the hopes and dreams of all the Straight Edger’s was waning then we get the unexpected. The Pepsi Loving, Straight Edge Wrestler finally made his return to professional wrestling… and it wasn’t for WWE!

CATEGORY 4: Storyline of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Adam Page Return & Redemption [AEW]
  • The Bloodline [WWE]
  • Josh Alexander World Title Win & Immediate Loss [IMPACT]
  • Miro the Redeemer [AEW]
  • Kenny Omega the Belt Collector [AEW, AAA, IMPACT]

 And the winner is……….

AEW invested a huge amount of time with an intricate slow burn to put Hangman Adam Page into the top spot within their company. There were twists and turns along the way and there was even a time when the fans wondered if it was ever going to happen, myself included. Then Page made his return, won the Casino Ladder Match and got his shot! Page vs. Omega was a great match, everything the fans wanted it to be. Finally, AEW has their own Home Grown Main Event Player and it was a great story arch to see unfold and come to fruition. The Bloodline storyline from WWE also got a high amount of votes but lost out by approximately 7%. That does not mean it has not been an impressive storyline, it has been stellar storytelling from Reigns and The Bloodline, the best storyline WWE has created in some time.

CATEGORY 5: Feud of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Adam Page vs. Kenny Omega [AEW]
  • Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly [NXT]
  • Britt Baker D.M.D vs. Thunder Rosa [AEW]
  • Edge vs. Seth Rollins [WWE]
  • Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

It is only natural that this feud got the top prize here, especially after also nabbing the Storyline of the Year. This feud was not just a simple title shot build up, as mentioned in the last category it was a much more complex feud than that. This was another exciting category to see voting for as there was approximately 5% difference in the top three votes and for the first half of the voting Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly was in the lead. In the end Edge vs. Rollins just pipped them in votes but nothing was going to beat Page vs. Omega.

CATEGORY 6: Comeback of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • CM Punk [AEW]
  • Edge – Royal Rumble After Injury [WWE]
  • Christian Cage [AEW & IMPACT]
  • Stings In Ring Return [AEW]
  • Brock Lesnar [WWE]

 And the winner is……….

After getting the Most Shocking Moment of the Year Rasslie, it is no real surprise that CM Punk took out the Comeback of the Year award also. The Second City Saint’s comeback was without a doubt the biggest story of 2021, well the one which had the most positive impact that is. The majority of the fans are happy with Punk’s return and we all wait with baited breath to see what 2022 brings for the one they call CM Punk!

CATEGORY 7: Breakout Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Matt Cardona [GCW & IMPACT]
  • Sammy Guevara [AEW]
  • Bron Breakker [NXT 2.0]
  • Dante Martin [AEW]
  • Carmelo Hayes [NXT/NXT 2.0]

 And the winner is……….

While it may come as no surprise that Bron got the win here, it was not an easy win. Dante Martin shot out the gates straight up and it was a three-way fight between him, Sammy Guevara and Matt Cardona. Dante and Sammy moved forward and exchanged the lead until Breakker started raking in the votes. Seriously who else has had a better breakout year than Bron Breakker in 2021? The guy came in with the NXT 2.0 Reboot and they pushed him to the moon, and he is now the face of the brand as the NXT Champion. If this is just a picture of what is to come, then perhaps Breakker will surpass the popularity and skill of his famous father and uncle.

CATEGORY 8: Pay Per View of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Death Before Dishonor [ROH]
  • Hard Times 2 [NWA]
  • All Out [AEW]
  • Final Battle [ROH]
  • Full Gear [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

While it was great to see some variety in the nominations for this category, the voting was a damn landslide. AEW All Out has been touted as the best Pay Per View of 2021 and it is easy to see why. The card has some brilliant matches on it. For a lot of people, why it was so revered was because the card flowed very well from start to finish. You can have a lot of great matches on a card but if they are not placed correctly then the event can come off as very clunky. This card had every match in its perfect place, yes even Paul Wight vs. QT Marshall. Then you add in the debuts, 4 in one night and all of them huge names in the industry and it is easy to see why AEW All Out was voted the best Pay Per View of the year.

CATEGORY 9: Match of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros - AEW World Tag Team Championship [AEW]
  • Britt Baker vs.Thunder Rosa - Lights Out Match [AEW]
  • Adam Page vs. Kenny Omega - AEW World Championship [AEW]
  • CM Punk vs. Darby Allin - All Out [AEW]
  • Adam Page vs. Bryan Danielson - AEW World Championship at Winter is Coming [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

This category was the battle of the AEW Matches! While the Bucks vs. Lucha Bros may have won, Britt Baker D.M.D vs. Thunder Rosa in the Lights Out Match was nabbing at its heels throughout the voting process, witch Kenny Omega vs. Adam Page at Full Gear coming up behind them. Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros was an impressive, brutal high flying mega spot fest of a match that gave the fans a high and happy moment to go home with.

CATEGORY 10: Heel Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Kenny Omega [AEW, AAA & Impact]
  • Roman Reigns [WWE]
  • MJF [AEW]
  • Moose [Impact]
  • Malakai Black [AEW]

 And the winner is………

MJF single handedly takes out his second Rasslie for the night here! MJF was without a doubt the best Heel in all of 2021. His stellar work against Darby Allin, Chris Jericho and the rest of the Inner Circle was great, then he closed out the year heading towards a feud with Mr. Straight Edge CM Punk. Roman Reigns, also had a great year but in the voting MJF was too strong.

CATEGORY 11: Baby Face Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • CM Punk [AEW]
  • Big E [WWE]
  • Adam Page [AEW]
  • Edge [WWE]
  • Darby Allin [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

The Hangman takes home his third Rasslie for the night! 2021 was a year that saw Adam Page go through a HUGE complete story arch! He went through the ups and downs, twists and turns and at times it looked like he was backed against the ropes with no way out… but after a short bout away from the ring for the birth of his child he came back with a vengeance and realised THE dream by capturing the AEW World Championship. Edge was the next in line votes wise after having a great 2021 that included a Royal Rumble win, a Wrestlemania Main Event and great entertaining feuds against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.

CATEGORY 12: Tag Team of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Jurassic Express [AEW]
  • Sting & Darby [AEW]
  • RKBro [WWE]
  • Lucha Bros [AEW]
  • Young Bucks [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

The battle for Tag Team of the Year involved the same two teams that won Match of the Year. Lucha Bros has a fantastic year putting on some great matches, including the Match of the Year with the Young Bucks, who lost out on this award by a whopping 21%. The Lucha Bros deserve all the accolades that comes to them for their work in 2021. They were a staple in AEW’s Tag Team Division and even if fans wanted someone else to take the title off the Bucks, they were still not disappointed when it was these two who accomplished just that.

CATEGORY 13: Female Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Britt Baker D.M.D [AEW]
  • Deonna Purazzo [IMPACT]
  • Becky Lynch [WWE]
  • Thunder Rosa [AEW]
  • Bianca Belair [WWE]

 And the winner is……….

I don’t think there was another women’s wrestler who had such a stellar year in 2021 than Britt Baker D.M.D. She has brought the AEW Women’s Division up from the ground and put it on her shoulders and just run with it. She has had impressive matches against Ruby Soho, Riho, Tay Conti, Kris Statlander and who could forget the Lights Out Match with Thunder Rosa. In other notable votes, Deonna Purazzo came in next who also had a fantastic 2021 basically lifting the IMPACT Wrestling Knockout’s Division out of the gutter and making it one of the bet women’s divisions in the professional wrestling industry.

CATEGORY 14: Male Wrestler of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • Kenny Omega [AEW]
  • Roman Reigns [WWE]
  • Adam Page [AEW]
  • Bryan Danielson [AEW/WWE]
  • Darby Allin [AEW]

 And the winner is……….

The Best Bout Machine picks up his third Rasslie of the night! Omega, while a divisive wrestler in 2021 but no one could question his performances and his work ethic. The man wrestled with several injuries to ensure that a storyline two years in the making got the finale it deserved. Omega wrestled all over the world and become a World Championship Belt Collector wherever he went. He took sunk himself into his heel persona and the fans loved to hate him. He may not have had his signature flare with his in-ring style but he evolved his style to suit his character and still put on fantastic matches against Jungle Boy, Adam Page, Christian Cage and Rich Swann to name a few. Kenny Omega definitely deserves this and the other two accolades he was won in the 2021 Rasslies!

CATEGORY 15: Promotion of the Year

The Nominees are:

  • AEW
  • WWE
  • GCW
  • IMPACT Wrestling
  • Ring of Honor
  • STARDOM
  • DOA Wrestling UK

 And the winner is……….

After looking at the Rasslie Award Winners so far it is no shock to see that All Elite Wrestling take out the Promotion of the year and in a complete landslide too! AEW has been a breath of fresh air to the wrestling industry since its inception in 2019. Over the last two years it has provided the fans with some magnificent moments, fantastic matches and pulled off some huge shocking moments and signings. All Out itself had 4 HUGE Debuts in one night! Yes AEW has had some polarising moments no doubt, but they have also provided exciting matches and moments for the fans and after such a long time have also provided WWE with the competition it really needed! With AEW’s rise we have seen the concept of the Forbidden Door as well as seen a company willing to work with the other smaller promotions around them. While the end result of the Forbidden Door may have been a bit disappointing to some, there is no taking away from how important it was throughout 2021. AEW is providing a mainstream alternative to the PG Product over at WWE, something the fans have wanted for such a long time. While a lot of fans may shrug off AEW and its accomplishments and sprout that it is just a WCW 2.0, you cannot deny the impact it has had on the wrestling world and thus it deserves to win the Rasslie for Promotion of the Year!

With that the 2021 Rasslies come to a close! I just want to once again thank the Real Rasslin crew for all their help and assistance in getting this off the ground. I also want to thank the fans who voted and made this the success that it was. It truly means a lot that you took the time out of your lives to participate.
