TNA Wrestling Review 18/01/2024

TNA is back! It is the first episode of 2024 and we are back under the TNA header!

What will this week’s episode have in store for us following a very successful Hard to Kill PPV.

Match 1: X-Division Scramble - KUSHIDA vs Trey Miguel vs Laredo Kid vs Mike Bailey vs El Hijo del Vikingo vs Jake Something

Trey hits KUSHIDA with the Lightning Spiral, doing damage to Laredo in the process. Jake clears the ring but gets taken down with a head scissors from Vikingo. Jake bounces back with a powerbomb to Vikingo, sending him over the top rope into a pile of bodies on the outside. Mike soars with a step-up Moonsault to the floor before Laredo picks him off the top rope with a Spanish Fly. Jake puts Laredo away with Into the Void to win.

An absolutely spectacular match to kick off the new era of TNA! The X-Division is always exciting to watch, but this match was something else. Absolutely incredible. Grade A

Interview Segment:

Gia Miller interviews Will Ospreay. He vows to defeat Josh Alexander again in their rematch tonight.

Promo Video:

Ash by Elegance has arrived in TNA.

Backstage Segment:

Gail Kim congratulates Gisele Shaw on winning the Ultimate X at Hard to Kill. Gail then tells Gisele that she does not need Savannah Evans or Jai Vidal to find success.

Match 2: Xia Brookside vs Tasha Steelz

The early advantage goes to Tasha as she hits the Three Amigos. Tasha gets a bit too confident as Xia capitalises and begins to build momentum. Xia hits the Broken Wings double knees, followed by a neckbreaker for two. Xia counters a cutter into the Brooksie Bomb to score the huge victory.

A good debut match for Xia Brookside. I can’t wait to see what TNA has in store for Xia, she is a great talent. Grade C

Match 3: Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) vs Eric Young & Frankie Kazarian

Eric bites the hand of James, allowing Frankie to capitalise with a spinning neckbreaker. Zack makes the blind tag as James dives through the ropes, taking out Frankie on the outside. The Grizzled Young Veterans cut off the ring and employ quick tags to wear Frankie down. Frankie creates separation with a suplex to Zack but when he tries to make the tag, James pulls Eric off the apron. Minutes later, Frankie is able to fight free and make the much-needed tag to Eric. The pace quickens as Eric goes on the attack. Frankie inadvertently strikes his own partner, leading to Grit Your Teeth and the win for the Grizzled Young Veterans.

I love the Grizzled Young Veterans! I am so happy that they are able to showcase their talents in TNA. Having a match against two TNA originals was a brilliant way to ensure a great match. Great match. Grade B

After the match, Frankie attacks Eric and lays him out with the Fade to Black. Frankie can be heard shouting, “This was supposed to be my year!”

Video Segment:

Moose, Brian Myers, Eddie & Alisha Edwards are shown celebrating Moose’s TNA Championship win at Hard to Kill. They are collectively known as The System. Eddie says that no one can beat the System, not even Nic Nemeth.

In Ring Segment:

Nic Nemeth is in the ring to address his TNA debut this past Saturday at Hard To Kill. Nemeth recalls his exchange with the new TNA World Champion Moose – and declares that he will become TNA World Champion. But Nic says that he respects the locker room and that is why he will not demand a TNA World Championship match without earning it. Steve Maclin interrupts and calls Nic a phoney. Steve claims that Nic will suck the blood out of TNA, then leave for somewhere else. Steve says that nobody is going to remember the name Nic Nemeth – all they’re going to ask is “whatever happened to Dolph Ziggler?” Steve knocks the microphone out of Nic’s hand but Nic takes Steve out with the Danger Zone.

Backstage Interview:

Gia Miller is interviewing Jordynne Grace after her Knockout’s Championship win at Hard to Kill. Jordynne says that she was honoured to be part of such a historic event. Trinity interrupts and challenges Jordynne to a rematch for next week. Jordynne accepts the challenge.

In Ring Segment:

Jai Vidal is in the ring and he is talking about breaking out in professional wrestling in Las Vegas. He says that it reminds him of why he left in the first place. The lights in the arena then go out and PCO is brought back to life!

Match 4: PCO vs Jai Vidal

An impromptu match. PCO hits Vidal with a thudding Chokeslam, followed by the PCOSault to score the dominant victory.

A squash match, which isn’t surprising considering who was involved. Nothing much to say about this one. Grade D

Backstage Segment:

The Motor City Machine Guns are backstage. Alex Shelley says what goes around, comes around. Chris Sabin says their history with Okada goes back to 2006. Okada walks up to them and says next week, he will return to TNA!

Main Event Match - Will Ospreay vs Josh Alexander 2

Josh hits a running crossbody, sending both Will and himself spilling to the outside. Josh locks in an Ankle Lock on the floor but Will breaks free and hits a tornado DDT. Back in the ring, Will soars with a phenomenal springboard forearm. Josh bounces back with a powerbomb backbreaker combo. Will sends Josh crashing through a table with a Tiger Driver off the apron. Josh makes it back into the ring before the referee’s 10 count but Will immediately catches him with a springboard dropkick. Will goes for the Hidden Blade but Josh collapses before he can connect. Josh is fired up but Will shuts him down with a Spanish Fly for two. Josh counters the Oscutter with a mid-air forearm shot. The fight spills to the ramp where Josh spikes Will with Piledriver. Josh tosses Will back in the ring, then locks in another Ankle Lock. Will sends Josh face-first into the turnbuckle to break the hold. Will hits a Poison Rana off the top, followed by the Hidden Blade but it’s not enough to keep Josh down. Josh turns Will inside out with a running clothesline, then hits the Styles Clash for a near fall of his own. Josh hits a thunderous C4 Spike to put Will away and score the victory.

An absolutely amazing main event! I don’t think these two could put on a bad match if they tried. I loved this match. It was just outstanding. Two extremely talented individuals who have got an incredibly bright future. Grade A+

After the match, Scott D’Amore gives a heartfelt message about the re-birth of TNA Wrestling. He says that TNA Wrestling is back and it’s never going away.

Overall, this was an amazing start to the TNA era of wrestling. The matches were great and I cannot wait to see where TNA goes from here! The opener and the main event were definitely highlights of the night.
