We at Real Rasslin have come to learn.
Former two-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Scott Norton shared a story that solidifies Haku’s reputation as the toughest individual in wrestling.
In an interview with Wrestling Shoot Interviews, Scott Norton recounted an incident during a match in NJPW with Haku, known in WCW as Meng, where he accidentally stuck his thumb into Meng’s eye, expecting a reaction, but to his amazement, he remained unfazed. Scott Norton described Meng as not only the toughest person he had ever met in the wrestling business but also as the finest individual he had known. Recalling their history in Japan, Scott Norton emphasised how their performances were adored by Japanese fans.
“I know everybody says Meng [Haku] and the thing is with Meng, Meng’s not only the toughest guy I ever met he’s also the best guy I’ve ever known. Me and Meng have a huge history in Japan they loved watching us work and he always told me ‘Scott you bring the animal out in me’ and I said ‘Great, put that son of a bi**h back in’ [laughs].”
During a particular match, Scott Norton vividly remembered Meng’s distinctive appearance with a massive afro that obscured his face, making it seem like he was wrestling a colossal head of hair. Scott Norton inadvertently inserted his thumb into Meng’s eye during a lock-up, expecting a normal response.
“But we went to town, and this was when he would wear his hair in this huge fro and you could never see his face it was like wrestling this big head of hair. And I went to lock up with him one time and I stuck my thumb in his eye and I said ‘Oh sh*t’”
However, to his surprise, Meng neither flinched nor made any movement, leaving Scott Norton in awe of his unparalleled toughness. Despite realising the gravity of the situation, Meng even apologised to Scott Norton, showcasing his remarkable humility alongside his legendary resilience.
“And Meng apologised to me. ‘I’m sorry’ I’m sitting here going I know how tough this dude is but I’m saying to myself ‘This is the toughest thing’ he didn’t even wipe his eye, he didn’t even move.”
Which Wrestlers Did Haku Say Even He Was Afraid Of?
Haku said that he was afraid of Harley Race, Road Warrior Animal, Road Warrior Hawk and Rick and Scott Steiner. He stated that those individuals were the toughest guys that he knew in the professional wrestling landscape.
