AEW Considering Vacating Championship?

To the surprise of many, on the September 11 edition of Dynamite, AEW commentator Nigel McGuinness issued a challenge to AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson for the September 25 Grand Slam edition of AEW Dynamite.

The surprising part of the announcement being not only the match itself, but the timing of when it is taking place, with Bryan Danielson previously being pulled from a scheduled AEW World Title defence against Darby Allin on the same show.

Despite Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness being advertised for Grand Slam, it comes with a major asterisk attached to it, with the match only happening if The American Dragon gets cleared to wrestle following his attack from Jon Moxley at AEW All Out on September 7.

With Bryan Danielson not yet being cleared, Nigel McGuinness has been providing regular updates on if Bryan Danielson will face him at the event via social media.

Following last night’s AEW Dynamite, Nigel McGuinness took to Twitter to post a new update on the AEW Grand Slam match, revealing a very interesting “rumor” he had heard if Bryan Danielson does fail to face him at Arthur Ashe next week.

Nigel McGuinness teased that his rival may be forced to vacated his AEW World Championship if he doesn’t show up to compete at Grand Slam, explaining in a short video:

“We’re 7 days to go to Grand Slam. And ‘The Fragile Countdown’ counting down. Still, the ‘American Coward’ yet to give any indication whether he’ll face me at Arthur Ashe Stadium.”

“I did hear a rumor, Bryan Danielson, that if you don’t show up, you might be stripped of the title. And if that’s the case, let me ask you. is not losing to me and me proving that I should have had all your success really more important than the AEW World Title. The ball’s in your court, Bryan.”

If the bout between Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson does take place, it will be one day before the 15-year anniversary of their last match with one another at ROH Glory By Honor 2009.
